How to Buy Stellar (XLM)

Buy XLM on Kraken step by step: KYC, deposit, order, withdraw. Covers the required deposit memo, the 1 XLM minimum balance, trustlines and Soroban.

Stellar (XLM) is a payments-focused layer-1 whose lumens pay transaction fees and satisfy the network's minimum-balance rules. This guide walks through buying XLM on a regulated exchange and moving it to a wallet you control.

Stellar in context: what you are actually buying

Stellar is a payments and asset-issuance network: its design centres on moving fiat-backed tokens cheaply between anchors rather than on general-purpose computation. XLM, the lumen, pays transaction fees and satisfies the network's minimum-balance requirements. Since the Protocol 23 upgrade, which went live on the public network in September 2025, Stellar's Soroban smart-contract environment gained parallel transaction execution and a reworked state model, lowering contract execution costs and raising throughput.

Memos are a genuine requirement, not a formality

Most exchanges credit XLM deposits into a single shared Stellar account and use the transaction's memo field to identify which customer the payment belongs to. Send XLM to that address without the memo and the transfer still succeeds on-chain — it simply lands in the exchange's omnibus account with nothing tying it to you, and recovering it depends entirely on the exchange's support process. Kraken's own documentation spells this out. One modern exception: since December 2022 Kraken supports Stellar muxed addresses, and where a muxed deposit address is provided, the routing information is embedded in the address itself and a separate memo is not required. Follow whatever the deposit page shows on the day you send.

Minimum balance, trustlines and why your wallet will not empty

Stellar accounts cannot be drained to zero. The base reserve is currently 0.5 XLM, and an account must hold at least two base reserves — 1 XLM — to exist, with every additional subentry (a trustline, an offer, an extra signer, a data entry) locking a further 0.5 XLM. Trustlines are the other Stellar-specific concept: to hold any asset other than XLM, you must first explicitly open a trustline to that asset, which is itself a subentry. So a wallet holding a couple of tokens needs a little more XLM parked than you might expect.

Listings, fees and wallets

XLM trades on Coinbase, Kraken and Binance. On-chain transaction fees on Stellar are a rounding error — a fraction of a cent — so the exchange withdrawal fee, not network cost, is what you are optimising. For self-custody, Lobstr and Freighter are common Stellar wallets, and Ledger and Trezor both support XLM with memo entry.

The XLM-specific risk

The dominant cause of lost Stellar deposits is a missing or mistyped memo. Copy the memo and the address in the same step, paste both, verify both, and send a small test payment before the full amount.

Step-by-step

  1. Step 1: Open an account on Kraken

Visit the official Kraken website. Click "Sign up" and enter your email and a strong password. Confirm the email link in your inbox.

  2. Step 2: Verify your identity (KYC)

Most regulated exchanges require ID verification before fiat deposits. Upload a government-issued ID (passport or driver's licence) and a selfie. Verification usually completes in minutes, occasionally up to 24 hours.

  3. Step 3: Enable two-factor authentication

Open your account security settings and enable 2FA using an authenticator app (Authy, Google Authenticator, Aegis). Avoid SMS 2FA — it is vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks. Save the recovery codes offline.

  4. Step 4: Deposit fiat

Link a bank account, debit card or use SEPA / ACH / Faster Payments. Bank transfer is cheapest; card deposits incur a 1.5–4% surcharge. Wait for the deposit to credit (instant for cards, hours-days for bank transfer).

  5. Step 5: Place a market or limit order for XLM

Navigate to the XLM/USD or XLM/EUR pair. A market order fills immediately at the best available price. A limit order only fills at your chosen price; better for large orders to avoid slippage.

  6. Step 6: Withdraw to self-custody

Once filled, transfer XLM from the exchange to a wallet that supports Stellar (a Ledger hardware wallet, or a Stellar wallet such as Lobstr or Freighter). MetaMask and Rabby are Ethereum-only and cannot hold native XLM. Exchanges are custodial — your keys live with them. Send a small test transaction first to confirm the address before moving the full balance.

FAQ

What is the cheapest way to buy XLM?

Bank transfer (ACH / SEPA / Faster Payments) on Kraken is the cheapest, with fees typically under 0.5%. Card deposits add 1.5–4%. P2P platforms can be cheaper but riskier.

Do I need to do KYC to buy XLM?

On regulated exchanges (Kraken, Coinbase, Binance), yes — KYC is required for fiat on-ramps. Decentralized routes via DEXes plus stablecoins do not require KYC but require crypto already in self-custody.

Should I leave XLM on the exchange?

For small amounts (< $1,000) or active trading, yes. For larger amounts or long-term holding, withdraw to self-custody (a hardware wallet like Ledger, which supports Stellar, is recommended). "Not your keys, not your coins."

What is the minimum amount of XLM I can buy?

Most exchanges allow purchases as low as $1-5 worth of XLM. XLM is highly divisible, so you can buy fractional amounts far below 1 whole coin.

Can I buy XLM with a credit card?

Yes, but card issuers often code it as a cash advance, triggering high APR and fees. Debit card or bank transfer is safer.
